This is only my personal observation, but lately it seems as though our dogs are really going to s*it. I don't just mean breeding for oversized or very low dogs. I mean the standard has been thrown right out the frigging door. So many people are becoming so impatient to make money, that they are ruining their chances at having GREAT dogs. I have come to "know" a lot of people on these boards, and though I respect your right to own a dog, I don't respect the breeding practices some of you have come to employ. The statement below is from a book called "Breeding Dogs For Dummies"
"Changing a breed means elimination or adding physical or tempermental characteristics. The standard of perfection is altered to suit the whims of the breeder. There is no way to veiw this other than complete disrespect for the genius that was obviously involved in the breed's creation"
If this statement is so obvious to the "Dummy Readers", then why is it so difficult for most other "proffesional, experienced breeders" to understand. Let me break this statement down for ya'll (even though I'm a hillbilly,
)
Changing a breed means elimination or adding physical or tempermental characteristics.
This statement clearly explains itself. If you are adding physical or tempermental characteristics that are not called for in the standard, you are, in essence, eliminating the breed you claim to love. This is what offends me most. I have no intentions of loosing my breed, and the more these sub-par breeders fuck it up, the more us true-blue "real" enthusiasts have to fix it.
The standard of perfection is altered to suit the whims of the breeder.
Today's "breeders" do not follow standards. We see so many dogs that are severely deformed (undershot, cow hocked, weak pasterns). They breed anything that is old enough in the attempt to get as many dogs as possible to get as much money as possible. The big, bully dogs are the perfect example. Just take a look at how many people are breeding these dogs, they have no clue as to what the standard is. Either that, or they don't care. The red line of dogs are going the same route, as are the game lines.
There is no way to veiw this other than complete disrespect for the genius that was obviously involved in the breed's creation
This statement refers to the founding fathers of ANY breed. Could they possibly look at our dogs today and say, with certainty, that this is THE BREED they helped to develop? I personally think they would be utterly disgusted! Our breed was created for a single purpose: to be a WORKING DOG! Some of the dogs I see today would never be able to perform at any task, let alone one that requires strength, agility, and endurance. To those of you (with the easty-westy, short-faced dogs) that say "My dog is able to do such things", of course he can, he is an American Pit Bull Terrier. He has heart, but with such bad structure, he won't be doing it for long....
To those of you who are breeding for true American Pit Bull Terriers, that are true to standard (even if they are large, or short and bully style): It's time to close the circle. When you breed, breed for yourself first and foremost. If you sell to the public, make sure you are selling to someone who cares to preserve the breed, not someone out to make money off of your dogs. When you produce a sub-par dog, alter them and give them to pet homes. Be patient in reaching your goals, there is no reason to hinder the health of your dog just to make pups. Be a mentor~when you produce dogs, you are responsible for them for their entire life~make sure the new owners have a knowledgable person to help them along their way. Finally, help to protect and preserve the breed that you claim to love. Help make sure that our grand-children will know about the American Pit Bull Terrier through first hand experience, not just by reading about them in a book because they are extinct.....
